The trail from Kobayr to Tsater is 6.7 kilometers long. It starts at the Kobayr Monastery, or you can begin hiking from the front of Tumanyan town. The trail ascends from the heart of the canyon up towards the plateau, gaining over 300 meters in elevation. The first 1.5 kilometers is the steepest part of the hike, winding through the forest via a serpentine path. As you emerge from the forest, you are rewarded with a stunning view of the Debed Canyon and the town of Tumanyan. From this vantage point, you can see the city’s chessboard-like layout, including the former industrial district and the brick factory.
The trail then continues flat through the fields. It's important to consider the time of day and season for this hike, as there is no shade along this part of the trail and the sun is overhead for most of the hike. After the 4th kilometer, if you look closely, you may find the Hermit’s Cross, a small chapel hidden in the rock behind some bushes.
The trail then heads straight towards Tsater. Giant stairs lead up to the cemetery and the old chapel of the village. To reach the village center, take the road on the right. The village center includes the village hall, school, kindergarten, and a park. Instead of exploring the village, you can also continue on towards Dzoragyugh, Dzoraget, or Hnevank from the trailhead.
Water sources/information
There is a spring in front of the Kobayr Monastery. In front of the Tumanyan bus stop, you will find another water source. Along the trail, after the 4th kilometer, there is another spring, but it can be dry depending on the season. Near the stairs leading to Tsater, you can find another spring, though it is now in ruins. In the center of Tsater, next to the school, there is a cold-water fountain.
