The 6.6 km Armenian national trail from Aghbugha to Okon starts inside the settlement of Aghbugha, where you cross a narrow stream and begin ascending a hill. This hike is a great representation of the Ijevan mountain range, with its white limestone cliffs visible on the left side of the trail.

These hills are mostly used as grasslands, where you may encounter locals reaping their harvest and stacking hay. The trail follows the Kayen mountain range, passing near Sharukar Summit (1,896 meters). If you want to climb to the top, it’s only about a 200-meter detour from the main trail to the right. The Khachaghbyur canyon becomes visible from the trail’s higher sections.

After Mount Sharukar, the route continues through large oak trees and then opens into wide fields, where a narrow path leads toward the village of Okon.

Water sources/information:

There are two water springs around Okon church – one before entering the village from the side of Aghbugha, and the other one located as you leave the village before entering into the woods. This spring is called after St.Hripsime, one of the prominent female saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Today, the old stone monument of the spring is replaced by a modern iron pipe.
