The trail from Haghartsin Monastery to Dilijan is 19 kilometers long, offering a rewarding challenge for those who enjoy mountain hikes. The route begins at the western side of the medieval Haghartsin Monastery, which is situated at around 1,400 meters above sea level. From here, the trail descends slightly toward the Haghartsin River before gradually ascending for about 6 kilometers. Along the way, you'll encounter several steep climbs, cross small streams, and pass through dense thickets. You'll also intersect with other paths and roads used by locals traveling through the forest.
At approximately the 6-kilometer mark, you'll reach the mountain ridge at an elevation of 2,000 meters. This is a great spot to rest and enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. After crossing the ridge, the trail descends into dense woods again, with some steep sections along the way. As you approach Dilijan, the trees thin out, revealing glimpses of the town below. After navigating a few winding paths, you'll emerge onto a road, which leads down to the main highway. Once across the road, the trail continues over a bridge, winding through the outskirts of Dilijan along the Aghstev River. The hike concludes in the center of Dilijan, where you'll find grocery stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, guesthouses, and dining options.
Water sources/information:
There is a water fountain in front of Haghartsin Monastery, next to the bakery, and another one behind the monastery at the hike's starting point. A mineral water spring can be found halfway along the trail, and there are also several fountains within the town of Dilijan.
Trail Notes:
The trail crosses several paths often used by locals for moving livestock or transporting wood. Be sure to follow the trail markers carefully. After rain, areas near the river or where vehicles have passed can get very muddy. In summer, dense undergrowth can cause the trail to narrow in some spots, making it harder to navigate.
