Chukar Trail

Chukar Trail

The Arpa Protected Landscape is centered around the Gnishik Canyon, which hosts an impressive 885 plant, 39 mammal, and 190 bird species. This trail gets its name from the super cute chukar bird (known locally as a “karakakav”), which you’ll likely encounter on this hike. To get to this trail, start at Noravank Monastery and follow the appropriate signs. Watch out for informational signs throughout the trail about the flora and fauna species that live there. There are two observation points above the canyon, from which you’ll wonder at Noravank Monastery, one of Armenia’s most impressive and unique monasteries, and maybe even spot a herd of bezoar ibexes, if you’re lucky!

The landscape are just breathtaking. You end the trail on a magnificient view over Novarank. Be careful though, it is 12km in total and very stiff. I recommend it only for good hikkers.

We started this trail from Amagu and ended up on the road between Amagu and Khachik. The Chukar trail is a bit challenging since you need to ascend almost all the time, but the views are picturesque and it is worth it. Don't forget to take enough water with you - we failed to find any water sources during the hike. P.S. We met some chukars during the hike, indeed!
