One of the unique hiking trails in ANT connects the village of Debet to Chkalov. This trail stretches for 3.6 kilometers. Starting from the heart of Debet, nestled at an elevation of 1000 meters, the trail gradually ascends towards Chkalov, offering a gain of around 300 meters in elevation. Along the way, you'll notice the rapid development in Debet, including the construction of a new school and playground, as well as cozy guesthouses and shops. Towards the end of the village, there's a water spring by a stream. Continuing upwards, the trail stays close to the river, passing by a handmade metallic stonemill hidden below the last house of the village, though it's no longer in use. It was likely once a vital part of the farming community, positioned over an active stream.
The trail winds through meadows and woods, still following the river's course. After crossing a wide meadow, you'll traverse a narrow path leading to another spring. As you near the edge of the hill, a breathtaking panoramic view opens up over Debet and Yeghegnut․ A narrow path through the bushes connects to a large pasture, from where you'll climb towards Chkalov, passing by wild almond trees. At the top of the trail, you can either continue to the village of Dsegh or explore the center of Chkalov, home to a restored 19th-century basilica church and several medieval cross-stones.
Water sources/information:
The initial water source is located at the heart of Debet, approximately 150 meters down from the trailhead, closer to the river, beneath a willow tree. The next water source can be found at the opposite end of Debet, just behind the last house of the village. In Chkalov, you can refresh your water from a spring in front of the church.
Trail Notes:
Before the final incline towards Chkalov, in the forested part, the trail blazing can be confusing on the last episode, however both signs will eventually lead you to the same wide path.
