Things to see
This easy hike in scenic Shirak Province takes you through a peaceful valley and along the Chichkhan River to Trchkan Waterfall, Armenia’s tallest waterfall! Bring some snacks for a relaxing picnic by the water.
Starting at the village of Sarapat, the trail runs parallel to the Chichkhan River. After hiking through a valley surrounded by mountains, you will reach the top of Trchkan Waterfall. Standing not far from the border between Shirak and Lori Provinces, this natural monument is protected by Armenian law. At a height of 23 m (75 ft), Trchkan is Armenia’s tallest waterfall and is sometimes called “Armenian Niagara Falls.” It is formed by the Chichkhan River, which flows from the Shirak Mountains and is known for its tasty trout. According to local legend, the fish inspired the waterfall’s name. During mating season, the trout swim upstream against the river’s current. Locals that once saw them jumping over the waterfall then named it “Trchkan” (a way to say “jumping” in Armenian.)
By the waterfall you’ll also find a picnic area where you can stop for lunch and relax. This easy trail takes roughly 2 hours to complete and is perfect for novice hikers!
