What is trekking?

Trekking in the mountains or hiking in rugged terrain refers to long-distance hikes along mountain trails, often with overnight stays in tents and shelters. It requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance, and unlike hiking, trekking usually involves longer routes and wilder terrain. It may also include elements of sport tourism, such as crossing mountain passes and gorges.

Required Equipment

Trekking equipment also requires technical gear and is divided into two categories: clothing and supplies.

Clothing:

  • Trekking boots with durable soles, comfortable for long walks

  • Membrane jacket

  • Waterproof hiking pants

  • Fleece jacket

  • Thermal underwear

  • Several pairs of socks and underwear

  • Gaiters

  • Hat, warm hat, gloves

Supplies:

  • A large backpack with a capacity of 50–60 liters

  • Tent and sleeping bag

  • Inflatable mattress or sleeping pad

  • Personal items (dishes, hiking utensils, cup)

  • Water bottle and thermos

  • Trekking poles

  • Phone charger block

  • Flashlight

  • Gas stove

  • Personal first-aid kit and sunscreen

How to Eat During Trekking?

During long walks in the mountains, it’s important not only to be dressed properly but also to eat well and correctly. The food should be as light as possible and take up as little space as possible in the backpack. It should be rich in carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It is also important to drink enough water, as there is a risk of dehydration during treks. At least 1.5 to 2 liters of water should be consumed each trekking day.

Trekking in Armenia

The mountains of Armenia are not just a natural landscape but a real challenge and source of inspiration for trekking enthusiasts. Majestic peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and unique views make this region the perfect place for those who want to test their strength and enjoy pristine nature. One of the most pleasant bonuses of trekking is swimming in mountain lakes and rivers, which gain a special charm in the summer season and become a magnet for tired travelers. For swimming, it’s best to choose the daytime when the water is warmest, and there is an opportunity to dry off in the sun.

The variety of landscapes and climate zones in Armenia allows for trekking almost all year round, except for winter. The best time for such trips is from July to October.

Trekking Routes in the Mountains of Armenia

Mountain Lakes of Mount Aragats

Горные озера горы Арагац, озеро Рапи

Aragats is the highest mountain in Armenia, and many tourists head there upon arrival. Those who feel that the peaks of Aragats are out of their reach often settle for Kari (Stone) Lake. It is the most accessible of the ten lakes formed on various slopes of Aragats. Only those who love walking and are not afraid of challenges can reach the most beautiful lakes of Aragats — Rapi, Astkhkan, and Mtnalich.

The trek around the lakes of Aragats begins from the village of Geghadzor, from where the groups head to Rapi Lake, located at 3,001 meters. It is directly beneath the northern peak of Mount Aragats. You can set up a campsite near Rapi Lake, light a fire, and rest. Then spend two more days on the slopes of Aragats, making daily walks to Astkhkan Lake (3,100 m) and Mtnalich Lake (3,501 m), the highest of all the lakes.

Trekking on Mount Aragats

Трекинг по горе Арагац

Almost everyone wants to visit Aragats, even if only to the easiest Southern peak. Routes vary by time available and readiness for challenge. One route begins from the Gegharot Waterfall (3,000 m), ascends the Eastern peak (3,908 m), camps in the crater, and next morning climbs to the Northern peak (4,090 m). Another starts at Kari Lake (3,207 m), goes to the Southern peak (3,887 m) with an overnight, then on to the Western peak (3,995 m).

For the bravest, there’s a 3–4 peaks program: Southern → Western → Northern/Eastern. Beginners should consider local guides for the Northern summit. This program takes 1–1.5 days and is among the most demanding ways to test endurance.

Geghama Mountains: Ajdaak

The Geghama Range is popular with locals and tourists alike. The trek to Ajdaak (3,597 m) starts from the village of Sevaberd, passes Akna Lake (3,032 m) where you camp, then leads to the dormant volcano summit with its crystal-clear crater lake.

Along the route you can visit vishapakars (dragon stones) and petroglyphs after descending from the summit.

Mount Vardenis
