Akhtala Monastery

The trail from Akhtala to Neghots is one of the highlights of the Armenian National Trail, offering an 8km journey through diverse landscapes. Starting at Akhtala fortress, you descend towards the village, cross a stream on a small bridge, and then follow the asphalt road uphill. Passing through the upper neighborhoods, you'll encounter wooden stairs leading to the gates of the copper mine near the village graveyard.

Continuing through the graveyard, you enter a charming forest alley. Soon, the trail veers left, taking you along an old railroad once used for copper transport. You might feel like you're in a movie scene, half-expecting a train to rumble by. Keep an eye out for the old mine tunnels to the right. Further along, you'll come to a water supply system and then a meadow, with a stunning view of the monastery from a unique perspective.

Suddenly, the landscape shifts to a dry, rocky terrain, with glimpses of Neghots village on the left. Then, the trail leads through young forests and flower-filled fields. Around the 6th kilometer, a meadow appears, and a short detour leads to a water spring dedicated to local legend Apro (see below). Continuing on, the sound of the Debed river guides you to an archway under the railway, passing through fruit tree gardens. Crossing a metallic suspension bridge and the main highway, you'll arrive at Neghots graveyard, eventually reaching the village center.

After the copper mine's railroad ends, a small landslide brought down a tree, making the passage a bit messy. Keep an eye out for trail markings after passing the water supply; instead of following the dirt road for vehicles, the trail sharply turns right behind a wooden fence. Before reaching Apro’s water spring, a large tree has fallen onto the trail, but it does not block the way.

Water sources/information:

You can refill your bottles at the Nurik center, located in front of the Akhtala monastery (open from 9am - 8pm). Around the 6th kilometer mark, you can take a short detour of about 150 meters to the right to find a water fountain dedicated to Apro.
