ANT 26 Yenokavan to Ijevan Trail

The Armenia National Trail, spanning almost 13.7 km, connects the village of Yenokavan with the city of Ijevan and showcases some of the best forested landscapes of the Tavush region. This hike passes through wooded hills, meadows, rivers, and canyons. The path mainly goes downhill, starting at an elevation of around 1,200 meters and ending in the center of Ijevan at about 700 meters.

Starting from the center of Yenokavan, the trail descends for about 2 kilometers along an asphalt road before turning left onto a narrow path. After crossing wide meadows, the trail enters dense forest and continues deep into the Mtnadzor Gorge, where some sections are so enclosed that they remain humid, cool, and hidden from the sun.

Following the river, the trail eventually reaches the village of Lusadzor. Before entering the village, you will pass several picnic shelters with water springs. At the very beginning of Lusadzor, the trail turns immediately to the right. The forested areas give way to open fields, revealing wide views of the Aghstev River valley and the surrounding mountains.

Through these landscapes, the trail continues for about 6 km before entering the village of Getahovit, which is nearly connected to Ijevan. The trail markings lead you through the settlement, offering glimpses of local life, agricultural scenes, and panoramic views of Ijevan from above. The trail then reaches the produce market and ends in the central square of Ijevan.

Water sources/information:

Inside Yenokavan you can find several shops and buy bottled water. Water springs are located near the village Lusadzor, inside picnic shelters. Inside Getahovit and Ijevan you can find both water springs and shops.

Trail Notes:

In case you want to skip the hike through the settlement, you can get a taxi inside Ijevan and drive to the exit of Getahovit village, where trail markings lead you towards open pastures and wild landscapes.

ROB WALKER
This is a fantastic hike. We took a taxi from Ijevan to begin the trail in Yenokavan. There’s a friendly little shop at the trail start to pick up any last minute supplies. Then a pretty walk through meadows before heading into a forest section. This was our favourite bit – it has a real atmospheric rainforesty feel. There’s a great picnic spot which you’ll see when you come out of the forest. Then you wander through the interesting village of Lusadzor before the final stretch to Ijevan. The timings above were pretty much spot on for us (if you subtract our picnic time). We ended with much needed (very good) tea and cake at the Novel Art Café in Ijevan. We used the wikiloc trail app which was v helpful at a couple of points to make certain of the route.
