ANT4: Akner to Sanahin
ANT4: Akner to Sanahin
This is the continuation of the Haghpat - Akner (ANT3) trail.
The route connecting Akner village to Sanahin is 4.7 km long. It's a great option for hiking enthusiasts who love dense forests. The trail starts from the center of Akner village and moves towards the forests along the main road. After a slight ascent for about 2.5 kilometers, you will see the ruins of the Surb Karapet Church from afar. The trail descends towards the river, then ascends to the top of the hill where the monument is located. From Surb Karapet, you can enjoy views of the surrounding settlements and fields.
The trail then crosses over the river one more time inside the valley. Throughout this section, the route passes through forests, which provide excellent shade for hikers on sunny days. These forests are rich with huge beeches and oaks with roots that wove an entire architecture. After crossing the stream, you pass by some barn and can see Sanahin village and the church domes further away. In this section, you will encounter an older, rural environment rather than the Soviet-era urban heritage of Sanahin.
The trail concludes near the monastery entrance, where you'll find a grocery store and a restroom. From this point, the route proceeds past the Mikoyan Brothers Museum and descends along a narrow path towards the town of Alaverdi.
