The 10.4 km trail connects the Sanahin station district of Alaverdi town to the village of Hagvi. The trail markers guide you through narrow paths between houses, eventually merging with a dirt road. From there, the trail ascends for about 3 kilometers, gaining nearly 400 meters in elevation. The climb is gradual rather than steep. As you hike, you’ll encounter various scenes of Lori, including river streams, valleys, and sparse bushes.
At the top of the climb, the trail markers will direct you towards the Sedvi medieval monastery and its fortress, which is a slight detour from the main route. If interested, you can hike about 700 meters to visit the church or walk 150 meters to the left to see the only surviving tower of Sedvi. From this point, the trail descends into the valley, crossing the river in three places. During the rainy season, the river's flow becomes more vigorous, making the hike slightly challenging. After the third river crossing, a small picnic area awaits where you can rest, marking the halfway point of your hike.
The trail then joins a wide dirt road and gradually ascends towards Hagvi. The final climb leads you to a plateau before turning left onto an old asphalt road, guiding you to the village.
Water sources
Before embarking on this trail, be sure to fill your water bottles, as the springs along the route are typically dried up. The only opportunity to refill your bottles is available in the center of Hagvi village.
