We’re not sure how old this trail exactly is, but we know it’s old, potentially ancient. It’s so old that there are early Iron Age tools scattered about!
The Iron Age Loop Trail connects to the Hayeli Lake Loop and the village of Artavan in the Vayots Dzor Province, passing through the pristine Caucasian oak forests of Artavan. Be warned, there are some steep segments on this trail! While hiking, be on the lookout for remains of what was once a metallurgical site, including a stone basin used for melting iron back in ancient times, as well as the ruins of what locals refer to as a bandit camp beneath the crags of Mt. Berdakar.
For ambitious hikers looking for a real challenge, the Iron Age Loop Trail also connects to the 14.2km Berdakar Mountain Loop, difficulty level - hard.
